Northreach

The frigid lands north of the Haunted Flats are only easily accessible by land during the summer months when the flats are relatively more benign during the longer daylight hours.  Farthest removed from Kreschingrad and the Mortannian Throne, the people of Northreach are the most rural of all Mortannians.  The capital of the county, a small fortified redoubt named Final Torch, is barely concerned with distant imperial politics and far more concerned with the numerous hazards that dominate the Voidsedge Forest which comprises most of the county’s resources and geography.

  • Final Torch (N Small Town) – The northern path of the King’s Road, such as it is, ends at the languishing port town of Final Torch. A settlement has existed here since before the Tenebrous Age as a refuge for Antravarcian exiles and criminals but after the Battle of the Fall it became the seat of power for the newly established county of Northreach.  The Count-Warden of Northreach reigns from a humble stone keep on the north wall, its singular tower poised against the Voidsedge Forest to keep watch on the strange creatures that dwell within.
  • Sightless Lodge – In Mortannia’s golden age, the Count-Warden of Northreach boldly hunted in the heart of the Voidsedge Forest, ultimately establishing an elaborate castle/hunting lodge in the very core of the untamed wilderness. None are fully sure why it was abandoned but most agree that the woods simply became too dangerous to make the two-week long trek from Final Torch.  Lone hunters report that it is still there, and peculiarly unclaimed by the wilds that surround it.  The lodge now takes its name from the rumors that any who seek refuge inside are found on the edge of the woods permanently blinded and amnesiac.
  • The Mount at World’s End – This perpetually snow-shrouded mountain at the northern edge of the mainland and the impressive castle carved into its side once served as a maximum security prison in the days of Old Antravarcia. Deep within its impenetrable walls, it is said that an ancient Antravarcian demilich still stirs, making plans for its inevitable return to Zenith.

Count-Warden Kondrati Kaverin (Male watchling aristocrat/bard) – The last of the Kaverin bloodline died with his adopted father, but none in Northreach questioned when the infirm Count declared his adopted son as his legal and rightful heir.  Kondrati is known far afield as a watchling, and is seen as uniquely able to bridge the gap between the rural Mortannian villages and the enclaves of fey that dwell in the Voidsedge Forest.  Gregarious and personable, the Count-Warden is said to be making romantic advances towards the enigmatic Faerie Queen of Voidsedge; perhaps in an effort to further unite the inhabitants of Northreach, or perhaps simply to partake in her mythically alluring beauty.
